Lambda Theta Alpha was recognized at Kean University in New Jersey
as the First Latina Sorority founded in the US.
The year 1975 saw the birth of what started as a vision - an idea of an organization, a sisterhood, that would cater to the needs of Latinas and the universal woman. Thanks to the tremendous strides made by our seventeen founding mothers, this dream was realized. Their desire to progress, dedication to the community, and aspiration for the advancement of the Latina women marked the beginning of Lambda Theta Alpha. It allowed the Latina woman in higher education to have a sense of belonging and with that, achieve her highest potential.
From 1975 to date, Lambda Theta Alpha has upheld its purpose and mission, each day realizing its founding mothers' dream - that it may serve as a quintessential trailblazer for all women."
Now, 39 years later, Lambda Theta Alpha stands strong as the largest Latin sorority in the nation. It has contributed to the advancement of many by supporting educated women of several races, ethnicities, and creeds. These women are leaders and professional in a wide range of fields. Being the first to recognize the need for a support system for Latina women in higher education, LTA has paved the way for many other Latina organizations, which continue to pursue the empowering movement this organization set the trend for.

Our seventeen Founding Mothers came together and stayed together by choice in effort to create the first Latin Sorority in the nation. The Founding Mothers are more than historical icons to the sisterhood, they are distinguished professionals within their fields and they continue to contribute to their respective communities on the social, political, and educational level. Their legacy of Unity, Love, and Respect has been carried by multiple generations of sisters over the past 35 years. Our Founding Mothers remain active with Lambda Theta Alpha. They participate in current National, Chapter, and Chapter events, proving that Lambda Theta Alpha is indeed a sisterhood for life. |
